3 Easy Ways to Help Yourself When You Feel Like You’re Drowning

We all live incredibly busy lives, often at 100mph without even registering what we’re doing.

When was the last time you were ‘in the moment?’

We have jobs, there may be children to take to school or to activities and parties, we might go to the gym, try and have a social life and then spend quality time with our loved ones. And sometimes it can all get a bit much.

Your priorities go right down on that list of ‘to dos’ and sometimes it feels like we’re drowning.

But how can we stop the merry-go-round and get off for a while? How can we come up for air?

Here are some simple tips that we can ALL do to help ourselves when life gets a bit much:

Switch Off

Literally.

If you run your own business, chances are you have your emails synced with your mobile phone meaning that you are ALWAYS connected to work.  You may have a ‘9-5 job’ where you have the same situation. Try not to reply to work emails out of office hours (i.e. after 5.30/6pm) – turn off your work phone when you walk through the door, or disable that work email account on your phone do you’re not tempted to check.

Allow your mind to unwind by taking that temptation to carry on working away.

Slow Down

Sometimes we need to remind ourselves that not everything needs to be done right this instant. We live in a very instantaneous world these days and every little thing seems to be available immediately or we feel like we need to deal with it right in that moment.

You don’t.

Prioritise your tasks and be strict with yourself on what absolutely must be done and when. When you write things down and take a close look, I think you’ll be surprised at how much you’ve been squeezing in that could wait until next week…or even longer!

Saying No

No. A word we all need to learn how to say every now and again!

Some weeks our diaries are packed with work appointments, life appointments and social gatherings – heading for drinks here, taking the kids there, meeting up with this friend, helping out this friend, popping in on the parents, going for dinner with the in laws…but where’s the appointment with yourself?!

Stop and think about what you are saying yes to and factor some me time into your diary. We don’t want to miss out or let anyone down, but it’s so important to schedule in time to do nothing every now and again otherwise we burn ourselves out.

It doesn’t make you a bad person if you prioritise yourself.
