| Practical Breakup Tips |
Heartbreak is a bitch.
One day you’re going about your life feeling loved and cared for. The next it feels like everything is crumbling around you and you’ll never be happy again.
The first two weeks are the hardest. You entire world gets turned upside down, you can’t eat, face the shower or think of anything else. You feel like you’ll never get through it and your world just feels wrong…so how do you cope?
Eat
Food is probably the last thing on your mind. When we go into fight or flight mode triggered by a rush of adrenaline, our digestive system shuts down – this is why most of us lose our appetite in stressful situations. But it’s important to eat something, anything. Forget your green juice diet just for now and have whatever you fancy just to get something into your body.
And if you’re someone who eats more when upset then go for it. Let yourself have that tub of Ben & Jerrys or that cheeseburger – just make sure you’re eating some good stuff otherwise that sugar crash is going to make you feel terrible.
Shower
What’s the point right? No-one’s going to see you and you’re going to die alone. I know, been there. But having a shower every day – even if you just get back into your pjs is a good way to help yourself feel like you’re making progress (and you are). Treat yourself to some nice smelling shower gel and take as long in there as you need. Just keep showering.
Talk
Talk, talk and talk until you’re sick of your own voice. When you tell a story it makes a new connection in your mind. The more you tell that story the stronger those connections become and it’s easier to process. Talk to your parents, to your friends, to people online and keep processing.
Go Outside
Leaving the house is the last thing you want to do, I get that, but a bit of fresh air will do you the world of good. Take a walk with someone or on your own – put on a great playlist and breathe in the outside world. Let your mind wander and enjoy it.
Don’t try to do too much in these first two weeks. Your life has just changed and it’s exhausting. Just be kind to yourself and we’ll work on the rest once we have a bit of time under our belts
